In November 1999 and in February 2001 I visited South Africa twice at the invitation of Mr. and Mrs. N. Oppenheimer, in order to give them advise on the use of indigeneous plants in their garden (Brenthurst Gardens) in Johannesburg. In order to find inspiration I visited the following nature areas: Telperion (at the border of Gauteng and Mpumalanga), Pilanesberg and Magaliesberg in the North West Province and Tswalu (Northern Cape, between Hotazel and Vanzylsrus, bordering the Kalahari Desert).

Although over the years an unusual formality came to play a role in the making of the Priona Gardens, nature has always been a more important source of inspiration to me than any gardening style. Though mainly based upon memories since 1980,  I have lately found time to travel again and gain fresh inspiration. Some of that is shown on this page: Alps, South Africa, orchids in the Correze and Slowenia.
